5 out of 5 stars Best ever   July 20, 2010
David Boyle (Monroe, LA)
I have been woodworking as a carpenter and as a hobby for 40 years. This planer is the best portable planer I have ever used. The Delta models are good, but the Makita is just better. Very little if any "snipe". Ready to use out of the box. Solid feel when using it. I would highly recommend it.

I got this planer three weeks ago and have since planed walnut, birds eye maple, ipe. Does a nice job, very little snipe, works quickly. The only beef is the dust chute is not included, you have to buy it separtately. It is highly recommeded that you get one. Over all a very solid nice machine.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent tool   June 6, 2010

I haven't put many board feet through it yet. . . but the tool is cranking out lumber like crazy. So far it is simple to use, sturdy, durable, and produces great results.

4 out of 5 stars Smooth cuts, issues with dust collection   June 2, 2010
JDJ (Washington, DC)
I had a portable Delta planer which was a workhorse but finally gave out after over 15 years of moderate use. Did alot of research and found that this Makita planer was consistently rated highly by users. The quality of the cuts and the set up right out of the box have been great. I have planed a couple hundred board feet of hard maple, and the Makita performed extremely well. Smooth cuts and plenty of power. The only complaints I have so far relate to the dust collection. First, I can't understand why you have to buy the dust collection hood separately. Second, the outtake on the hood is an odd size (I use a shop vac in this part of my shop for dust collection) and my hose does not fit very well into the hood. Other than that, I am very pleased with the planer. I would recommend it to any woodworker who is looking for a high quality medium duty planer.

I know there are less expensive planers on the market. But when I think of how long I will use tools, I'm willing to spend more for the added value over a lifetime.
This planer provides machine shop accuracy, and leaves the work so smooth that there's no thought of touching the work with sandpaper.....and it does this time after time.
