The dust hood changes everything on the planer. Were once was a pile of dust and fibers covering half the garage, now there is so few chips you could count them. I hooked the planer up to a 1 1/2horse delta dust collector with a 4 inch line, but my shop vac worked ok as well. Definately a good buy.... but the mounting is a little shacky with the way the screws go in to the point where you might screw things up if you do it too often. Basically, you have to leave it on, which wouldn't be bad except that you can't close the outfeed extension with the dust hood on. This means that there is not an easy way to transport or store the planer once the hood is mounted. I had to build a stand on wheels after I added the hood which took up alot of space in my small shop.

Bought this to replace dust hood that came with planer. Though it looked different I went by the statements saying it fit the DW734. It does with much modification and one three handed person (two can't get to it and you need three hands to hold the cover, the blade guard and the screw & screwdriver. I give it a couple of stars because it is more solid.

This attaches to the chip chute on the upper rear section of the planer right behind the blades. It is very good at catching the shavings. As long as your dust collector doesn't get clogged, the chute doesn't clog. I used to use it with my shop vac and didn't have an issue with clogging too often. However, since the DeWalt planer has an internal fan to expel chips, you could probably use this with just a section of 4" hose aimed at a trash can and still get some benefit from this dust hood. I kick myself for not having purchased this sooner.
